Texas Rowing Center is excited to announce the return of stand-up paddleboard yoga sessions! SUP yoga classes are taught by Sonya Palumbo. Sonya has been teaching for the past three years at Soul Strong Yoga in Round Rock.
Stand-up paddleboard yoga offers a one-of-a-kind activity that is gaining popularity among Austinites looking for a unique and fun fitness and nature experience. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi looking to shake up your routine or it’s your first time, SUP yoga offers a refreshing way to find balance on and off the mat. We talked with Sonya about what to expect at the classes, and advice for beginners, and everything else you would need to know.
What are the benefits of SUP yoga?
"Doing SUP yoga can help improve your balance, build strength and grow your mindfulness practice. Spending time outdoors can help reduce stress and improve your overall mood. The benefits are both physical and mental. Also, it's so much fun!"
What should I bring to SUP yoga?
"I recommend packing light as you don't want too many things on your board. But you really don't need much. Just water, a hat and sunscreen. Wear clothes that are comfortable, easy to move in and that you don't mind getting wet."
When are SUP yoga classes and how much do they cost?
"SUP yoga classes will be every Sunday morning at 9:00am - 10:15am. Tickets are $40 per person and the class size is a maximum of 15 people. Classes will run from May to the end of October."
What can I expect at the class?
"We'll meet at the Texas Rowing Center dock where we'll get everyone set up on their paddleboards. Then we'll paddle for about 10 minutes, which gives students an opportunity to warm up and get comfortable on the board. We'll start our yoga flow seated and slowly move up to standing and play around with trying to balance with different poses. At the end there is a short relaxing meditation where students will lay on their boards and let the water gently rock them."
Is there anything else beginners should know before getting started with SUP yoga?
"We welcome all levels, whether you're new to yoga or paddleboarding. We ease you into it and guide you through the whole thing. And you don't have to stand on your board if you don't want to. The yoga flow can be done seated or at a low stance."
